If you’re new to scuba diving and planning a trip to the Big Island, you’re in luck — Hilo is one of the best places in Hawaii for beginner-friendly shore diving. With easy entry points, calm waters (most of the year), and vibrant marine life, Hilo’s east side offers unforgettable underwater experiences without needing a boat.
Here at Hilo Scuba Diving, we specialize in introducing new divers to the ocean through relaxed, safe, and fully guided shore dives. In this post, we’re highlighting our favorite shore diving spots around Hilo — all perfect for beginners.
🐢 1. Richardson Ocean Park (Richardson’s Beach)
Why It’s Great for Beginners:Richardson’s is one of the most popular and accessible shore diving locations in Hilo. With a protected cove, shallow reefs, and relatively calm conditions, it’s a perfect spot for new divers getting comfortable underwater.
What You’ll See:Expect to encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, butterflyfish, moray eels, and colorful wrasses. The lava rock formations and coral structures here provide excellent habitat for marine life and make navigation easy for first-timers.
Bonus Tip:It’s also a great place for non-divers to snorkel while you’re out diving!
🪸 2. Leleiwi Beach Park
Why It’s Great for Beginners:Just down the road from Richardson’s, Leleiwi offers multiple protected tidepools and lava rock channels that make for an easy, scenic entry. The dive site gently slopes from shallow to deeper water, allowing new divers to ease into the experience at their own pace.
What You’ll See:A wide range of reef fish, urchins, and possibly even spinner dolphins cruising by in deeper waters. Leleiwi is a great spot for macro photography lovers — nudibranchs, shrimp, and other small critters are common here.
🐠 3. James Kealoha Beach Park (4-Mile)
Why It’s Great for Beginners:Locally known as “4-Mile,” this site offers a shallow reef system and relatively calm conditions when the swell is low. It’s less crowded than Richardson’s and features large tidepools for pre-dive briefings and skill practice.
What You’ll See:Parrotfish, goatfish, squirrelfish, and sometimes rays in the sand patches. The reef here is healthy and teeming with life, with excellent visibility when the tide is right.
Instructor Note:We often use this spot for confined water training dives as part of PADI certification courses.
🌙 4. Coconut Island (Moku Ola)
Why It’s Great for Beginners:This site is shallow, calm, and incredibly beginner-friendly — especially for those doing their first Discover Scuba Dive. Located in Hilo Bay, it’s ideal for practicing buoyancy, equalization, and basic dive skills before moving on to deeper sites.
What You’ll See:It may not have the vibrant reef of other sites, but you’ll still find plenty of marine life like damselfish, sea cucumbers, crabs, and the occasional sea turtle passing by.
Pro Tip:It’s a great warm-up dive and perfect for nervous first-timers.
