Your Guide to Getting Started with Scuba Diving in Hawaii
If you're planning a trip to Hawaii and dreaming about exploring the underwater world, you're probably wondering:Should I try the PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience, or go for the full Open Water certification?
At Hilo Scuba Diving, we offer both options and help beginners decide which path fits their goals, schedule, and comfort level. Here’s a clear breakdown of the difference between Discover Scuba Diving and the PADI Open Water Diver certification — so you can decide what’s right for you.
🌊 What Is PADI Discover Scuba Diving?
PADI Discover Scuba Diving (often called “DSD”) is not a certification, but rather a one-day introductory experience that allows you to try scuba diving without any prior training.
✅ Perfect If You:
Just want to try diving once during your trip
Have limited time (just 2–3 hours)
Aren’t sure yet if scuba is for you
Want a safe, instructor-led first dive from shore
What’s Included:
Basic safety briefing and shallow water practice
One guided dive (up to 40 feet)
All gear provided
No exam or prior experience needed
Bonus:
If you love it and decide to pursue certification later, your Discover Scuba dive may count as credit toward your Open Water course!
🏆 What Is PADI Open Water Diver Certification?
The PADI Open Water Diver course is your first official scuba certification. It allows you to:
Dive up to 60 feet (18 meters)
Rent dive gear
Book dive tours worldwide
Dive independently (with a buddy)
Once you're certified, you’re a diver for life — and can continue your training with advanced or specialty courses.

Want to get certified once and for all
Are ready to invest 2–3 days of your vacation
